It needs no reminding that people on the internet can be nasty. Just look at the comments section of any post, and you’re bound to find at least a few stinkers in there. TikTok is no exception to this.

In fact, the viral video-sharing app might even be the perfect place for such people to do their thing. With how easy it is to find a video from anyone in the world, and how popular the app is with young people, it makes it incredibly easy to bully and be nasty to people you don’t know.

Alicia McCarvell faced an army of nasty comments all because of how she looked compared to her husband.

“It’s because, by beauty standards, we don’t make sense.” – she said

She had posted a video of her and her husband doing some TikTok trends. But despite doing the exact same thing as every other couple did, theirs got a lot more attention. And it was because of how they looked.

It’s no secret that Alicia is on the heavier side. Her husband, by contrast, is incredibly gym buff and even sports a killer beard.

He could easily be on the cover of Men’s Health, and he is happily married to Alicia.

Of course, people refuse to believe that they are truly a loving, married couple. Because people suck.

Beauty standards benefit some, at the cost of everyone else. It almost seems like there’s no escape from it. It’s okay to have preferences or a type, but it shouldn’t be all you ever care about.

Wherever you go, it really seems like people are just that shallow. Looks are all that matter to them, and Alicia took it upon herself to shut them up.

“And since we don’t add up, people try to add things to my side of the equation to make it make sense – by saying things like “Oh, she must not have been fat when they met” or “Oh she’s gotta be rich.”

They truly cannot fathom the idea of a man like Scott simply not having that same attitude.

One woman even took it a step too far and thought she could convince Scott to leave Alicia for her. The nerve of some people!

“A woman slid into Scott’s DMs and said “You should be with somebody who looks like me. She was thin and, by beauty standards, a 10 out of 10.”

But when age or weight catches up to you and you no longer have your good looks, what do you have left besides a trashy personality? That’s one point Alicia made very clear to them.

If looks are all you have to offer, then you won’t get very far.

Especially if your looks change.

“And on the scale of what my husband values, how well my body fits into the body standards is not on the top of his list. He values my humor and my commitment and my love and my caring heart. And none of these things that he values about me change if my body changes.”

The unhealthy emphasis we’ve placed on looks has ruined life for lots of people.

There are already cases of people feeling depressed for not fitting into those standards. And at worst, we’ve been conditioned to ridicule people who look different than what we’d expect.

And for everyone’s sake, it’s time we grow out of that.

We won’t look the same forever, so maybe we should be valuing a lot more things than just our looks.

Alicia put it frankly too.

“And I get it if this is the way you think, it’s the way you’ve been taught. However, it is your responsibility to unlearn it.”

I hope her message got to these people and maybe helped you learn something too.

Listen to her say it herself in her video below. As always, kindly share this article with more people as well!
